Abby Roque -
Abby Roque is an American ice‑hockey forward from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation, making her the first Indigenous woman to play for the United States women’s national ice hockey team. She first gained widespread recognition during her NCAA career with the Wisconsin Badgers, where she helped the team win a national title in 2019. In her senior season, she stood out for her scoring and two-way play. Her strong defensive instincts, playmaking, and physical presence on the ice laid the foundation for an elite professional career.
With the launch of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), Roque signed with the New York Sirens as one of the league’s founding players. She quickly became a consistent offensive contributor — over two seasons with New York, she recorded 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 54 games. In March 2025, she made history by scoring the first-ever “Michigan goal” (a lacrosse-style goal) in PWHL history — a testament to her creativity and stick-handling skill in tight spaces.
On the international stage, Roque has been a pillar for the United States women’s national ice hockey team. She earned a silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics — becoming the first Indigenous woman to represent Team USA at the Games — and helped lead the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship. Her performances on the global stage have solidified her status as one of the most impactful players in women’s hockey.
